What to Do About Vitamin A Toxicity | Chris Masterjohn Lite #126
Vitamin A toxicity. Here is what to do. Hi. I’m Dr. Chris Masterjohn of chrismasterjohnphd.com, and this is Chris Masterjohn Lite, where the name of the game is “Details? Shmeetails. Just tell me what works!” And today we’re going to talk about what to do about vitamin A toxicity. In the last episode we covered how to know if you’re vitamin A-toxic. So, here is what are we going to do about it. So, the first thing is figure out what the likelihood is that you have a serious problem. Because if you have a serious problem, you should see a doctor, but if you’ve been taking 10,000 IU of vitamin A for quite a long time and you have headaches and you’re speculating that maybe the headaches are caused by too much of vitamin A, then I think you can take out the vitamin A and see if they resolve and follow the other recommendations I’m about to make without going to see a doctor. Simply because the likelihood that you have any serious vitamin A toxicity is extraordinarily low. On the other hand, if you went through the points in the last episode and you say, “Okay, I have signs and symptoms of vitamin A toxicity, my blood work seems to support it, and I’ve actually been taking doses that make it plausible that I have a serious problem,” then you should definitely see a doctor. Because even though a headache can be resolved quite easily on your own, you could have serious problems in your liver or other organs where you’re doing damage that has caused the need to be addressed with medicine. So, you want to rule out that you have serious problems. And if you do, if you do have serious problems, you want to get them addressed with the proper medical care. Now, with that said, what I think is reasonable to do as a strategy regardless of what medical treatment might be needed is number one, take out the vitamin A supplements. Number two, if you have vitamin A-rich foods, particularly liver, take them out, but when you do so, be very mindful of the other nutrients that the liver is supplying and go through the checklist to see how you’re making up for that with the other foods in your diet. And then number three, I would say add supplements of the other fat-soluble vitamins. The reason for this is that all of the fat-soluble vitamins are broken down and excreted in the urine by similar or even the same metabolic machinery. So, there’s a degree to which excess amounts of any one fat-soluble vitamin will encourage the breaking down and elimination of the others. You don’t want to add just vitamin D, or just vitamin K, or just vitamin E because then you will not only encourage the breaking down of the vitamin A, but you’ll also encourage the breaking down of whatever is missing in the — in the supplements. So, what you do want to do is supplement vitamin D, vitamin E, and vitamin K. What doses to use, what ratios? I’m doing a little bit of guesswork here, but based on trying to keep them within the same level of the degree of excess over the typical requirements, I would say that your ratio should be about 400 IU of alpha-tocopherol form of vitamin E that can definitely also include mixed tocopherols and even tocotrienols in the background. But the amount of alpha-tocopherol to shoot for I would say would be 400 IU. One milligram of vitamin K2 as menaquinone-4. And 4000 IU of vitamin D. I would just keep it to those amounts if you’re going to do this on your own. If you’re going to work with a qualified healthcare practitioner to monitor the levels of all of these vitamins, then I think it’s safe to use those ratios, but double or triple the amounts to see what’s most effective at reducing your levels of vitamin A and reducing other markers, as well as the signs and symptoms of vitamin A toxicity while not going overboard in creating toxic amounts of any of the other nutrients.
