Evelyn’s Story

Evelyn’s Story

(inspirational music)
– My name is Evelyn Harris, I’m 85 years old, and my life has been terrific. When I was 43 years old and I was expecting my eighth child, I started becoming very aware of my heart, and when I was 70 years old, I woke up one morning
with this terrific pain right here in my stomach, and so when I walked into EIRMC in the ER with the EKG on, and boy, things started to fly. They said that my heart was
100% blocked on the left side for 40% of the heart. I’ve known all my life that heart problems run on my father’s side. When I recovered enough
from having a stint put in and the heart attack, then I went home, but I was put in cardiac rehab, which, I cannot praise
those nurses enough, and they said, “If you
get shortness of breath “do not try to have your husband
drive you to the hospital, “you call the ambulance, “the ambulance is set up to
save your life, the car isn’t.” And so one week to the day, in the night, I just, I could hardly breathe, so they took me to the hospital and I was treated for
congestive heart failure. Four years later, I was
rushed to the hospital and checked me for a stroke first, and then put in a pacemaker
and a defibrillator, and they said that
otherwise I would have died. For the next six years I
continued to have heart problems, going to the hospital to be
checked for different things. And I was watching my grandson’s ballgame and all of a sudden
this chest pain hit me, and the doctor put two stints in. I was in the hospital
seven times in four months, everything heart related. I had four heart blockages, so they put in four more stints in and when I need emergency care, I say, “Take me to EIRMC!”
