CBD: Is It All It’s Cracked Up to Be?

Hello, everybody. Welcome back
to the brand-new Season Two, Season Two of the Dr. Nancy Show. I am your host,
holistic nutritionist, fitness expert, and now soon-to-be author. More on that in just a minute. But, first, I’ve got some really,
really great important news to get to. If you are just logging in, welcome. Tell me if this is your first time
or you’re a regular. I’d love to know
where you are logging in from. I’m in Southern sunny California. It’s beautiful out there. Again, this is Dr. Nancy Lin. I am super excited to be here kicking off Season Two with you,
my Smarter, my favorite Smarter fans. Now, remember,
a quick programming note. This season of the Live Show Season Two will be at 8:30 a.m. Pacific Standard Time. That’s 11:30 a.m. on the East coast. And that’s a change from last year,
but you guys have written in and asked me to shift the time. It seems like there are more
of my sweet dear friends that are able to tune in
at this specific slot. So this is what we are doing
just to meet your needs. Amanda is on.
Hello, Amanda. How are you?
Good to see you. Your daily dose of Dr. Nancy live. So make sure that you share the news
with your family and friends, and tune in every morning weekdays
wherever you are. My friends at Smarter Nutrition really let me open up
different offerings in Season Two including special deals on the Dr. Nancy’s
Special Smarter health packages. We’ll talk a little bit more about that. And even prizes. It’s like Oprah,
“Everyone gets something.” It’s gonna be exciting. Hello.
Reinaldo’s on. And Eleanor, hello. Pete, good to see you as well. Special deals? What? What? Everyone’s like,
“You had me at special deals.” Special deals, you can only get
if you are a viewer of my show. Yay. You never leave empty-handed. So, get ready, you’re going to love it. Heidi, hello.
How’s your mama? Heidi, good to see you. Okay, so if you got to tune in
to yesterday’s show, you know what I was up to
during the last time and that we actually had regular shows, Season One,
and then now Season Two. So, in between that sweet space, I’ve really been focused
on my show, research, uncovering new exciting information
that I’ll be sharing with you over the course of this season. Everything from the latest information
on diet and supplements which is changing once again. It’s always changing, right?
The evolution. Hey, Dave. It’s always changing. Diet and supplementation,
my latest views on that. Oh, some big studies
that recently came out, it really, really had me thinking
again and again about my stance, especially for those on keto
or heavy meat paleo diets. Research on that got me thinking. Plus, I’m gonna get you
into more of a space where natural ways to get more energy
and get your body moving again, that is going to ring bells for you and that’s gonna help you live
a more optimal healthier life. So, I’m gonna take all of that
and better ways to deal with stress and find mental clarity, all of that. And I researched it,
I packaged it up for Season Two. Once again, I’m really, really grateful
just to be back and to see you. I just loved our journey
during Season One and I can’t wait to see
where season two takes us. Speaking of journeys,
I mentioned it earlier– ♪ Don’t stop belie… ♪
Just kidding. I mentioned it earlier,
but I’m soon to be a published author. I’m just about finished
with my new book, crossing the Ts and dotting the Is, it’s gonna be great. I’m talking about
a specific meal plan approach that’s better than the Mediterranean diet. And we are going into
the different aspects of optimal health looking at five different specific ways
that you can optimize your health, and I call them the five pillars. So, it’s gonna be super exciting. And I also have exercise program
specifically for people dealing with chronic pain
from head to toe. And I go through
all of the most common symptoms of discomfort in the body, and then we do stretches,
specifically for that. So those are all the things
that I’ve been working on. Very, very exciting.
Trust me. One health topic,
or should I say, products, that has really blown up
since Season One is CBD. My sweet fans
or people watching, can you please write CBD for me? Now, it would be really helpful.
Somebody help me. Can somebody help me scribe? CBD– Oh, my goodness.
I have to take a pause for this one. CBD is everywhere, right? Marketers everywhere
have gone CBD crazy. Here’s a question. What are some of the craziest products
that you’ve seen CBD infused with? You guys write that down. And I’m gonna share
some of the ones that I found that kind of had me thinking,
“Really? Does that work?” Kind of interesting. Hello, Samantha. I love your energy, Samantha.
Thanks for being on. Okay. CBD oil, tinctures, pills, drinks, candles, candies, gummies. CBD water.
Who’s seen those? CBD water.
Anyone tries CBD water? Yeah. Amanda is like,
“Yeah, oils, drink, certain foods.” What about CBD-infused cooking spices? They exist.
Everything I’m gonna say exists. CBD toothpicks, CBD potato chips, face masks,
bath bombs, hair gel, uh-hmm,
just put on your hair. Ah. [laughs] Instantly like that, right? Oh, CBD-infused bedsheets,
toilet paper, mascara, workout gear, yeah, the new trend of infusing clothes
with CBD uses microencapsulation technology to trap the particles of this compound
and release them into your body during your workout. Yeah, I know. It’s supposed to reduce
inflammation and soreness before the workout even starts. Although scientists are not sure
this is a good idea and you probably have to pay
a pretty pay. Anyways, I wonder
if there are CBD air. Okay, I’m just kidding. But, really, CBD in everything, right? How many believe in the power of CBD? Well, if you live in a state
where CBD is currently legal. a lot of people are logging in
from different states, you know that CBD has gone
from being a fringe thing to absolutely ubiquitous. Everywhere all at once,
it was like this– overnight, right? Coffee shop selling CBD lattes, and spas offering CBD facials,
we talked about the face mask, beauty companies adding CBD
to their formulas, and everyone
from anxiety-ridden coworkers to people suffering with joint pain, your neighbors,
they want to try it. It’s– I don’t know.
It’s kind of an intriguing, right? I tried it. Quite frankly, I’ve never seen
anything like it, a health product hyped so much
as CBD has, especially given the glaring lack of… I’m gonna say it. …clinical studies proving that
it even worse in the first place. I’m gonna get to that
in just a minute. Okay, first things first. What is CBD? Well, CBD is short for cannabinoid, a chemical compound
in the cannabis sativa plant, also known as marijuana or hemp. Okay, it’s a naturally occurring substance
that’s reportedly used, and I chose that phrase carefully,
“reportedly used,” to impart a feeling
of relaxation and calm, pain relief, or a myriad
of other health benefits. But unlike its cousin, THC, another major active ingredient
in marijuana, CBD is not psychoactive which means it doesn’t get you high, it doesn’t get you
to that point of feeling like you don’t have control
for your ambitions, okay? Now, you know me,
I’m someone who searches for effective natural alternatives
to big pharma, harmful chemical-based medicines. So, you would probably think
Dr. Nancy– CBD is right up your alley, right? How many of you,
just a quick question, have tried CBD or at something CBD-ish
for pain relief? You guys give me
a thumbs up or a heart. Just let me know,
“Yeah, I’ve tried it.” Did it work for you? I’m also a PhD nutritionist, however, and part of the scientific community, I’m not about hype
or anecdotal information, and neither is this show
for that matter. You know what,
neither is Smarter Nutrition. Smarter Nutrition truly
is a science-based company. So, yes, I get excited. I got excited
when I first heard about CBD, but then I did my due diligence and I read up on everything
there was to know, I believe, at that moment in time
about CBD. And my radar on CBD is way up. So, maybe it is what they say, right? But we need to be more conclusive
and do our due diligence to research before I go all the way in, I go all the way in, and then I want to recommend it
to my clients only if all my dots aligned. So, we hear a lot about how effective
CBD is for managing aches and pains which over 60 million people, 60 million people
in the United States alone suffer from a chronic pain
on a regular basis. That’s not good. But, again, the journey is still up, right? And it’s not just me
who feels this way. Dr. Sanjay Gupta. Who knows Dr. Sanjay Gupta, right? He’s world-renowned neurosurgeon
and Emmy-Winning medical reporter for CNN. He has followed CBD science closely
for the last five years specifically and he shares the same sentiment. He continues to question
why much of the reported CBD benefits are so short-lived. Aren’t you interested in that?
Why is it? And it goes far– He goes as far as to wonder
if it could be, really could be just all
of the marketing hype. Well, to date, the FDA has clearly stated that it is not legal to market CBD
as a supplement. And I can find very few studies
that demonstrate to me that there are clear
long-term benefits of using CBD to manage chronic aches and pains. How many of us– How many of you guys
watching right now, you’re dealing with some form
of discomfort pain in your body and where are you feeling it? I have neuropathy in my hands. I’ve got stuff going on
on my back, right? So, naturally, we’re always on the lookout. Our radars are out. Our feelers are out for something
to help us, right? Yeah, tell me in the comments below what you are experiencing right now
as discomfort, and then we’ll get back to that. So equally concerning for me
are the results of a recent CBD study in the Journal of American
Medical Association, very popular JAMA, J-A-M-A, where researchers analyzed,
they took in– They analyzed 84 CBD products
from 31 companies. Guess what? What percentage did they find
of these companies were mislabeled? Mislabeled. That allowed people healing
and trying to alleviate their discomforts. I see you, guys. Seventy percent.
Seventy percent. Can somebody write that down? Seventy percent of the CBD products
mislabeled, some of the products
had no goose eggs, zero CBD at all. Some companies had too much CBD, and some even had
substantial amounts of THC mixed in. Now, other studies show
that some CBD products contain dangerous synthetic ingredients that have been responsible
for outbreaks of illness throughout the country. That’s not something that was,
you know, in the air to help us what we thought. Preconceived, right?
That’s not what we want. We don’t want synthetic things
in our bodies, especially when we’re thinking
we’re going to something super holistic and effective. The legitimate vendors of CBD
who take the time to ensure consistency,
safety and quality are now sadly lumped in together with the dishonest and the dodgy ones, and then now it leaves the consumer
confused about where to turn. So many people have written me and said,
“What do you think about CBD?” “I got this,”
“I got marketed this,” “What do you think?” I’m just like, “Ah, it really depends.
I don’t know.” Because of the juxtapose
research out there. There’s not a lot of research. And then you got companies
who are manufacturing these potions and these creams and these promises
that really aren’t effective. So before I go on, I want to issue
a real, clear, strong warning to all of my friends and followers, I want you to be very careful
with CBD, okay? Be very, very careful. It appears to me
that many marketing companies are putting profit
in front of the well-being and the law, and they’re possibly playing
dangerous games of ignoring the FDA. FDA is right there. They’re ignoring the FDA’s guidance and the warnings on CBD. So, I only make the statement
based on my research and my concern for your health
and well-being. And so I really, really don’t want you
to waste your money or your hopes that something like this cream,
or this face mask, or this mascara or this workout gear infused a CBD, it’s gonna, you know,
make all of the discomforts go away because maybe that’s not
the true answer, or the truth, the truth of it. I come from a space of love and care. So, I hope you received that well. All right.
Thank you, Running Bears. Running Bear says,
“I’m glad you did your research on this.” I do. I do do my research. Science fact, science base because
we really want to know the truth, right? Get all of the shiny stuff away,
just tell me the truth. We don’t have time for all the shiny stuff. So until there is more conclusive research, bottom line, until there is more
conclusive research and evidence surrounding the effectiveness of CBD, I’m gonna continue to tout that, you what, I’m gonna say what works. A lot of people just say,
“Dr. Nancy, just tell me what works.” Supported over 10,000 studies. What works? It’s the amazing
inflammation vital benefits of turmeric. Somebody write that down for me. Turmeric.
And you guys know I love turmeric. You know for the longest time
I was known as the curcumin girl, the turmeric girl.
[chuckles] Anyway, specifically, curcumin.
I talked about curcumin. The active ingredient inside turmeric
is curcumin. Somebody help me write
that down, too. And this has been, and will be, and continues to be the number one
all-natural leading choice for managing overall aches and pains. So, all of you guys
who are writing in and saying, “This is where I hurt,
I hurt my ankle. I hurt my back.
I’m I’m healing from hip.” Curcumin, you got it.
You got to have it in your brain. You got to have it in your house. It’s been a while since we talked
about the powerful benefits of curcumin. So, how about a quick refresher
on curcumin? Yeah? Okay, let’s do it. Hey, Karen.
How are you? Okay. So, you all know
what turmeric is, right? The beautiful golden yellow root
or a powder, okay? It looks very much like the sun.
It’s very, very beautiful. It’s very bright and brilliant. Turmeric.
It’s one of my all-time favorites. It’s been used for hundreds of years,
maybe thousands of years in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine
for its anti-inflammatory– inflammation-fighting
antimicrobial properties and with great reason,
with great reason. Turmeric contain hundreds
of beneficial compounds. We’re getting a little sciency,
but it’s good to know, right? Turmeric contains hundreds
of these beneficial compounds including fatty acids and fiber, minerals like iron and manganese, and something known as ses– You’re gonna love this word. Sesquiterpenes. Which is a bioactive substance
that can help reduce inflammation. Now, the main active compound
in turmeric, however, is curcumin, and it’s a powerful proven
inflammation fighter with numerous other benefits
throughout the body. And as my regulars know,
you guys know this already, Anytime I can choose
a natural compound, versus something synthetic
pharmaceutical drugs, ibuprofen, I will. I don’t even– I get a headache,
I don’t even go towards my medicine cabinet because I don’t have anything like that. I go for water
or I go for my curcumin. I will, in this case,
a natural supplement that effectively turns off the enzymes, if you know that that is the one
that triggers inflammation pain, I’m gonna always go to that. So I mentioned that turmeric and curcumin
have been widely used in functional medicine,
but it’s now– This is so exciting. It’s now making its way into mainstream
medical communities as well. Yes, I love that. Especially, as a way to address
aches and pains in both your joints and your muscles. So, all of you guys who are experiencing
that discomfort and you want it gone, this is something that you really,
really need to adapt. This practice of taking your curcumin. It’s even being endorsed
by several of the leading arthritis foundations as a natural way to help deal with the painful effects
of arthritis, okay? I can speak to curcumin’s effectiveness, not only through the work I do
with my clients all over the world, and through my research,
but also on a personal level. And I talked a little bit about my pain
in my wrists and my back. I can tell you firsthand why the right form
of curcumin works as well. Hey. Mary. How are you and Kenny? I’m doing good.
Thanks for tuning in. So I’ve suffered from chronic pain
for years. One of the most difficult aspects
of dealing with chronic pain is that each individual case
is so different. Every single person is made up
of different experience, different history, different bodies. So it’s very common to see variations
in duration and intensity of pain, right? You’re not like your neighbor
or your friend. It may for you feel like
a sharp or dull or a pain, or it may come and go,
it can stay a little bit. It really is very different
from every single person’s experience. Every single person. So, if you’re like me,
you get used to this what I call chronic pain cycle. Chronic pain cycle. Does anyone have
these chronic pain cycles? All right, here’s my story. And before I got my chronic aches
and pains in my back, in my hands, before I got all of that under control, I really struggled,
they would come and go. But as I got older, as I got older, it seemed like there were more pain days than pain-free days. I have a very busy schedule
as most of you guys do as well. I’ve got three young kids,
career demands, and everything life
seems to throw at me, and then you add on top of that
managing pain and neuropathy, I can’t feel my hands most days. You put that on top of it all, yeah, everything kind of starts to slip. My mood starts to slip
and then I’m this mean person. I don’t want to be the mean person. I started researching
turmeric supplements which quickly then led me
to the discovery of curcumin. You should have been there on the day off. I’m like, “What is this golden thing?” It was incredible. So, this curcumin provides much more
therapeutic dose of what I need to break that inflammation cycle
and get rid of my aches. It was so immediate.
It was a miracle thing for me. My research led me to Smarter Curcumin. And being in Southern California, I’m so lucky to be able to go
and actually meet the people behind this incredible product. This is Smarter Curcumin.
This is what it looks like. You know two years later, incredible, over two million bottles sold. Two million bottles sold. So, you know what,
here’s why Smarter Curcumin is number one. Let’s see– Let’s look at what
sets Smarter Curcumin– Smarter, Smarter in general, Smarter Nutrition
apart from all of the rest. A lot of people ask me, “Dr. Nancy,
do you like this curcumin?” And they screenshot
all these curcumins they’ve bought. I’m gonna tell you
why Smarter Curcumin is the best. And why it’s different from the rest. For starters, curcumin is hard
for the body to absorb. Can somebody write that down?
“Curcumin hard for the body to absorb.” So, Smarter Curcumin, Smarter Nutrition uses only the most active
bioavailable form of curcumin, something called
95% Tetra-Hydro Curcuminoids, they’re mouthful. But just to know that they’re using that which goes to work
in your body immediately, versus all the other companies and all the other curcumins
which take hours to work. And because it’s fat soluble,
it also comes in a soft gel, it comes in a soft gel. And it has also something called
the black seed oil which is another
powerful natural antioxidant and inflammation-fighter
in its own right with a range of other health benefits also supported by hundreds of studies. So, you can kind of see why I’m like,
“Yeah, of course.” Plus, it also includes ginger root. Somebody help me write “ginger root.” That’d be awesome. Ginger root helps
to further reduce inflammation and help with digestion, too. Now, research shows us, like curcumin,
the natural chemicals in ginger, work in different parts of the body including the stomach,
the intestines, and the brain,
the nervous system as well to help tame the flames,
pacify the flames of inflammation. Smarter also uses astragalus. Astragalus. Amanda, you’re doing such a great job.
Can you write astragalus for me? Astragalus which has also have its roots
in traditional Chinese medicine where it’s been used as an adaptogen, we love that word “adaptogen,”
for thousands of years, activates when you are under stress to help avoid inflammation. It is one of the most powerful
immune-boosting plants on the planet, astragalus, and it’s an essential herb in the daily bonus as regimen
of my top holistic nutritionist. Not only that, there’s also ginseng. Can somebody–
Oh, Amanda is doing it for me. Thank you, Amanda. Ginseng use for its beneficial compounds
known as ginsenosides, okay? And these provide powerful
immune support and also fight inflammation. So, yes, supplementing
with Smarter Curcumin every day essential in your inflammation
fighting health. It’s just something that you need
to have as a normal routine, consistent thing,
practice that you do every day. All right, so if you guys just joined,
I just want to recap what we talked about. When you walk down the street, it might appear
that CBD is all the rage, right? It’s being marketed everywhere. So today, we talked about CBD,
how it’s marketed everywhere. It’s ubiquitous. It’s being marketed as a savior
for those aches and pains, the chronic ones
all over your body. And while we might learn
down the road that there are scientifically
validated benefits with CBD like there are with the curcumin
I just talked about, the current CBD market
is unregulated. The current CBD market
is unproven and in many cases, unsafe. At this point, snapshot in time,
at this point, the research just isn’t there,
it’s not conclusive enough, it isn’t there where I need– where I need it to be,
where I expect it to be in order to endorse it
or recommend it to you or to my clients. Instead, I want you to stick
with what I know to be the absolute, most powerful,
powerful effective plan to reduce your chronic aches
