B12 Explained: Should Vegans Supplement?

B12 Explained: Should Vegans Supplement?

Vitamin B12 is made by neither animals nor plants but by microbes A whole foods, plantbased diet can help prevent, treat and reverse many of our leading causes of death But because of current agricultural practices it’s difficult to obtain vitamin B12 naturally anymore Before we started destroying the soil an washing things, we used to get it from things like unwashed vegetables and well water Non- human animals still get some from there and some from eating their own feces It can also be found in dead animals because they get some from the soil and farmers inject them with it But since B12 can be destroyed by some forms of heating, meat, dairy and eggs aren’t necessarily a reliable source Both Vegans and non- Vegans can become deficient if they don’t supplement But it’s fortified into many everyday products like cereals so most people don’t have to think about it Our bodies can re- absorb it from our intestine so it can take years for a deficiency to occur As a Vegan you can get it from fortified foods like dairy- free milks, yeast flakes or Marmite You can also get it from tablets, sprays and injections Since credible doctors like Michael Greger recommend supplementing B12 as a Vegan, the simplest option is to take a weekly B12 supplement providing at least 2 500 μg ”Everybody needs to insure regular, reliable source of vitamin B12 that’s including those people who eat meat Yes, they get it from meat, but that’s not where you wanna get your nutrients It’s lacking all these wonderful things we want like fiber, um- And has some things that we don’t want like saturated transfats, cholesterol ect. Just like we can’t get the iron in beef without the saturated fat, the protein in pork wihout lard, the calcium in dairy without hormones, we can’t get the B12 in animals without also consuming stuff we don’t want like cholesterol For example, to get 47 μg of B12 from eggs because the absorbtion is so low, we’d have to literally eat hundrends of scrambled eggs a day 200 to 400 eggs a day The hygienic source, the safest source the healthiest source, the cheapest source is vitamin B12 supplements The cheapest way to get our B12 is probably one 2 500 μg supplement, chewable or liquid supplement of ccyanocobalamin once a week It’s easy to dismiss supplementation as unhealthy and unnatural But in the world we live in, this kind of purity is illogical and unhealthy in itself Keep in mind that clothing is a supplement just as a toothbrush is But they do as good So we shouldn’t refuse them The reason why we you have to take is that- 500 years ago we got our B12 the same place the deer and antilope did We drank stream water we- pulled up unwashed vegetables and ate them And- The B12 is made by the soil bacteria and they (mumble) in the water And because of modern sanitation those sources’ve been taken away from us And for that reason you need to take a B12 supplement and feel okay about it It’s okay to take those supplements Don’t neglect it, it’s serious business Subtitles by the Amara.org community

  • Princess of the unicorns

Hey! Was just thinking this weekend that i might get checked out to see if i'm B12 deficient! I haven't been supplementing but it might be time too! Thanks for this!

  • Li-San Loves

Great video 🙂 It is more beneficial to supplement b12 as a vegan than to not supplement as a meat eater.

  • Luka Chu

I like how straightforward you explained this issue. I'll definitely send people this video if they ever question me about B12!

  • Kieran K

Bought some B12, straight after watching this😀

  • VeganRevolution

    To the point!

  • QuixoticQuaver

Do multivitamins and supplements actually work? All I've heard is that there's no evidence they improve your health.

  • Mad Mak

    Nice video

  • Wren ❨V❩

Good video 🙂 I get mine from nutritional yeast and I also have B12 liquid that goes under my tongue.

  • Advocate Of Growth

Very well explained! Thanks for making this video!

  • TKAT

    Great vid man

  • For the Love of Pants

This is a great video topic! When I was pregnant and still a meat eater, I had anemia and B12 deficiency, so you can eat meat and still lack B12 🙂
Funny how being vegan transformed my body in to this healthy, awesome machine! 😀

  • hammypie

thank you!!!!! everyone needs to know and stop asking me where I get my b12 lol. I get mine from Amazon.com, cheap and vegan!! yay

  • V1nc3nt20

Again, very good video. Just one remark: Please don't show Alpro stuff. It's been bought by Dean Foods in 2009. They are known for cruelty to animals and they own an enormous milk production branch. They are also partners with Monsanto. In 2012 Dean Foods founded "Whitewave Foods" and Alpro is owned by this newly found company now. Still, Whitewave Foods and Dean Foods keep strong business relationship. We shouldn't fund them with our money.

  • Disco Nouvo

explained so well. another great resource video from you. you're amazing. 🙂

  • Vegan Power Couple

  • s l e e p y g i r l

I have recently become vegan, and am taking B12 supplements. Is there any negative side affects I should be concerned about?

  • Lizard King

i wish we had unwashed veg and well water these days, that would be awesome. I WILL NEVER SUPPLEMENT

  • The Minimalist Ninja

I recently started taking it despite my b12 levels being OK. However, as I do not eat any fortified b12 foods and if, than fairly rarely, I figured it is best to start now (5 months being vegan) than too late. thank you for sharing! I was quite confused at the beginning re b12 🙂

  • Raw egg

Everyone uses unnatural things like cars, clothes, phones and no one bats an eye… But those same people tell vegans they're wrong cos its "unnatural". Who the hell cares if something is "natural" or not, if its good and healthy?

  • Ericaann

thank you for this video! i was unsure if i should supplement or not, but i will be sure to keep it up now :))

  • RMH Jackal

i like to use toothpaste with b12 ^^

  • mishell Rath

The thing that sucks in my case is that there are no vegan certified vitamins where I live :/ I still take b12 supplements but Im not sure if theyre actually vegan. Vegan companies like deva or others dont ship to where I live. Also I hope it`s ok to post this on your page but Im trying to help out someone, this is a lovely woman who runs a facebook page on how to raise kids vegan and have a vegan pregnancy she made a bet with her husband that he would try veganism if her youtube channel got to 300 subscribers… Itd be amaing if people helped out! 🙂 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC14EIFppmqJvkuyLpog85ww/about

  • Lauren Jestelle

  • Daffy Peaches

I have to, through injections. I have the same thing as Durianrider, where my body lacks intrinsic factor. Only found out a early this year through a Doctor's test, I recommend everyone who is feeling tired and does not seem to find the clear cause of it, get tested.

  • Gemma G.

    Thank you for this!

  • Galaxy Motions

I can get b12 from almond of milk?
I'm not eating animal products nor putting supplements in my body
I can't even get a hold of it
    I'm 16

  • Tilly 269

I'm not quite sure how i feel about that smiling woman at the end. I feel like she was about to try and negate what the man just said. Great video by the way as always 😉

  • Emilie Francois

Question 1: how much marmite should one eat to get enough b12 in a daily or weekly basis?
Question 2: any ideas for replacing butter with marmite? (I tried coconut oil… and urm, no) Also I boycott palm oil and don't want to use margarine…

  • Ruth Adel

Great info.. Thank you for sharing..B12 is super important

  • Peter Cobourg

Good points. Thanks for bringing awareness👍

  • Tim Scott

I have never been short on b12, but well I eat and drink things like marmite and alpro soya and stuff

  • soaptotallyveg

great vid -what are your thoughts on iodine and magmesium

  • Amelia Joan Lock

hey man, great video as always, you know that generic email you said in one video you send to people with all the collated info on Veganism? how can we access it so we can learn more?!

  • PlantPowered Earthlings

False Carnivores can't digest any nutrition full stop from meat because they're actually herbivores, so they can't at all acquire any B12 from any sources at all unless they took a vegan supplement through food sources or like spirulina things like that or a tablet once a week. I hate when a ignorant person asks where do you get you b12 from i ask where do you get yours? They are more deficient in b12 and so many other life giving nutrients for their cells than Vegans ever will be. Haha

  • RebekahSing

    Brilliant. Just so logical

  • Karin Mabry

Great video- but dang it, I thought methlcobalamin was the right one, not the other one. I need to go back to the research drawing board!

  • Nikos Melianidis

I take B12 by wheat grass juice, i soak the wheat to the water for one night and after i throw away the alcoholic water(rejuvelac) and after that i cover it with a towel and irrigating for 2 times a day(2 days) and finally i remove the towel and i put it behind the curtain(indirect photosynthessis) and again i irrigate it twice a day and finally after one and half week i harvest it and drink it from the masticating juicer.

  • Spideyfit

Great Video! Spider turned Vegan 3 weeks ago..

  • Vegan Generation

Thanks for doing these much needed videos and making it so shareable!

  • Alicia Dubois

I've never took any B-12 supplements or fortified products (like fortified plant milk, nutritional yeast, etc.). I've been vegan for about a year and a half now and just recently got blood tested, my B-12 results were perfect and I honestly don't understand why, but I'm still happy because meat-eaters kept arguing about it with me haha, so guess it's a good thing 🙂 Amazing video by the way! (Sorry for my English I'm French)

  • Darkprincexx

supposedly, the recommended daily amount of b12 you should take is 2.4 micrograms. so why do you need to take over 2,000 a week?

  • London Calling

I take vitamins including b12. I took b12 when I was eating meat because I was low. now I'm a vegan my b12 is high so I take less once a week.

  • High Carb Rider

Dude your videos are awesome, keep it up and never stop fighting

  • GeminiSpiritNB

How are B12 (and other) supplements made? Do they get them from animals or use some form of animal products in them or are the supplements completely vegan?

  • Ryan Alexander

So much effort though. Haha. Ask Tim (Shieff) if he takes B12 supplements, I don't think he does.

  • Ina Gutowska

Great video, I already take b12 supplement, I'm a fitness girl so I love my supps, now switching them too to vegan options, like my protein shake, my multivitamins, bcaa and I take some vegan amino acid capsules, just for good measure haha

  • Mashed Potatoes

Would consuming nutritional yeast (b12 fortified like Red Star) in your meals be fine instead of supplementing?

  • Cecilie Marie

Should I talk to my doktor about it or just buy it at the pharmacy?

  • Cono geLeto

    What about iron?
I'm trying to go vegan but I'm anemic and I experienced some bad situation during my transition from an omnivorous diet to a vegetarian one, such as tachycardia, weakness and vertigo. Should I use iron supplements? Can I have enough iron from nutrition? If it is so, which food contain enough iron?
Thank you so much for your videos, they're interesting and helpful.

  • Reyan Ali

why is it when I take b12 supplement I cant sleep?

  • Saaross

What about the b12 that's in chlorella and weedgrass? Could you please answer? Cause I'm taking them every day.. Tnx

  • František Svoboda

Very good video Michael! The most dense and comprehensive I have seen. Just sent it to a transitioning friend, I believe it will make an impression. Keep it up please 🙂 <3

  • hiraeth

I drink fortified almond, soy and coconut milk but I should probably start taking a weekly supplement just in case

  • Jacques Boesinger

Your videos and channel are awesome!! 🙂

  • Petra Kalkofen

I was hoping someone could help me understand what B12 does in the body and why it is necessary? Thank you~

  • Caitlyn French

I'm 13 years old so I'm not sure how I'm supposed to get B12, what should I do?

  • Lu Lu

If you ate a bit of marmite each day would that be enough B12 ? Thanks for your insightful video !

  • Lady RoMia

I eat marmite with gluten free toast and dairy free margerine. I guess we are all looking for a 'youth serum' but I honestly feel my best when I eat lean meat ( occasionally throughout the week, lots of fresh veg and no dairy or gluten or mass quantities of sugar) plus daily exercise. I dont smoke or drink because I like how I feel when I take care of myself etc. This week I am preparing myself to eat liver and onions as it has alot of B12 in it. I personally think we all find different ways of growing and nurturing ourselves since we leave our Mothers lap. Eating and drinking sensibly for me does not mean purely eating one specific thing….I feel it is important to eat a bit of everything that is good for us meat included ( specially lean meat)

  • Elly Diaz

Love your videos! Gonna binge watch your channel all week! 😉

  • Natalie Haddad

every single one of your videos are fantastic, I love the music and you explain things so well plus ur voice is so soothing.. 😀

  • Tabitha McCoy

My significant other doesn't want me going vegan because he says, "If you go vegan, you're gonna have to get half your nutrients from pills! Do you want to live the rest of your life getting your nutrition from supplemets?"

  • GaryOakIsMine

Is Bob's Red Mill Nutritional Yeast a valid absorbable substitute, or is it a B-12 analogue? B-12 analogues are not well absorbed by the body, aren't colbalamine(?) and can cause deficiency. I have been using nutritional yeast for quite a while, is it viable? I am slightly on edge now…

Thank you for the wonderful videos, keep up the good work! Cheers, mate! 🙂

  • Brent Oatfield

You are a breathe of fresh air. So many of us vegans are promoting their form of veganism and denigrating all the rest. Vegan is Vegan!

  • lauren x

Thank you for actually explaining it simply!

  • I-BS

how mach do u need per day?

  • lok

I gotta say, I'm a little confused. FullyRawChristina said that you did not have to supplement in her B12 video, and this one says you do. I don't know who to believe and its the only thing holding me back from being vegan. Please help

  • Mamadinixxx xXx

Can you take from spirulina enough B12???

  • chelsea crook

love this video, your channel is amazing too. keep up the good work and we all must keep promoting a vegan lifestyle 🙂

  • Ole Didrik

if I get "100%" of vitamin b12 (by drinking a couple of 15% glasses of rice milk) be enough when you consider our ability to absorb the vitamin?

  • Tanya Wood

Absolutely loving your videos, you have really helped me. thankyou please keep up the good work.. you are a legend!

  • Sabrine Chouib

god bless u thank u so much 😍😍😍

  • Raw Mama

    great video. thanks!

  • MooHahaBee

So it is okay to take cyanocobalamim? I read a lot of articles which said not to take cyanocobalamin, but rather methocobalamin (I think that's what it's called) because the first one contains cyanide..

  • Jarred Gilbert

so we screwed up the environment so bad that a natural vitamin that we need is gone now and we need to supplement it?

  • Black Crane

i am a chicken eater bt still subscribed to his channel 😂

  • A.K.M Art

I take a multivitamin and it has b12 in it. I also have a nondairy milk like coconut, rice, almond or cashew milk in my smoothies every morning! I will have to try nutritional yeast. Does anyone have any other suggestions? 🙂

  • chicago chicago

Yes vegan should take supplements to survive from animal products . Without supplements you put your health in the high risk like pernicious anemia . Unfortunately yes most of animal products nowadays are contaminated .i need to know how many tbs of marmite should I take to cover my b12 a day

  • Ena Nenadović

Ahoi! The option to translate the video does not appear when I click on subtitles as on most videos. Is there something you or I should do in order to fix that?
I would love to translate many of your videos! They are short, concise and still provide so much valuable information! Thaaaanks! 😉

  • KZ

at 1:14 it says 250 mcg, my supplements only provide 10mcg( which it says on the package provides 400% of the referall intake). This would mean i need to eat 25 a day? am i missing something xD

  • atl richard77

  • sol celeste

  • SevenStarfish

Wait, sorry if I missed this but so can you get it from fortified foods?

  • sjewitt22

Most people don't supplement b12, are you saying most are deficient.

  • sjewitt22

In the U.k which is the best supplement brand? i've also been told that getting the cheap ones is just as good as the expensive as it's all the same the expensive ones are more costly due to marketing etc.

  • Matt Lam

Uneducated meat eaters be like "but vegans are deficient in protein, iron, calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12"

  • aawaz khadka

How do supplement companies make B 12 supplements? Do they grow B12 producing microbe colonies at industrial scales?

  • Sarah Ivonne Stojanov

You are great! Putting so much effort in this

  • Zyle Yelton

God damn marmite 😂 jk love your channel man!!🌿🌱🌿

  • Miggsie

By microbes, yes, you seem to have omitted the fact that the microbes live in the intestines.

  • Eddie The Blackest

Thank you for this video, I've learnt something new!

  • Irina Volpi

  • Amirkia Aghajani

I think you didn't say Using VEGAN Supplement! We all have to use the Vegan one.

  • Claire 2.0

A better form of b12 supplements is methylcobalamin, it has better absorption than cyanocobalamin.

  • Leo Licht
