Alternatives to Whey Protein Shakes | Blossom Bariatrics | Las Vegas

Hi, I’m Michelle Phelan, nutritionist at
Blossom Bariatrics, and today we are going to answer some frequently asked questions from
our patients. Chris from Salt Lake City, Utah, asks, “When
I drink my whey protein shakes I feel nauseous and I break out in hives. What’s going on?
I can’t drink them and I know I’m not getting my protein in that I need every day.”
Well Chris, you could be experiencing whey intolerance or true dairy allergy, so I recommend
going to your primary care physician and getting tested for these things.
However, in the meantime, I recommend to all my patients who do experience some discomfort
after their whey protein shakes, to check the sweetener on the product. Sometimes it
could be the artificial sweetener that they use. So, experiment with different brands
and different flavors. Another option is to use a plant-based protein
powder. I like to recommend any rice and pea protein powder, which mixes instantly in your
almond milk or water, or your rice milk just like the whey protein. All of these come in
flavors such as vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. I hope you found this information useful.

I've just realized that whey protein is making me very tired to the point I need a nap afterwards. I'm assuming it is causing an insulin spike. So I've decided to drop it and cottage cheese and then see how I respond.

I might try pea protein, really I just need something for flavor as I put raw farm eggs in my shake anyhow.
